Earplug Weekly, 9/27/24 Edition
Happy Friday evening, folks.
It’s time for another installment of Earplug Weekly, the only weekly music newsletter made exclusively for the people who periodically daydream about participating in a well-attended panel discussion on the topic of whether Jimmie Dale Gilmore or David Berman more accurately captured the essence of the city in their respective songs titled “Dallas.” The moment when panel moderator Jim Schutze lifts your right arm in victory while fellow panelists Robert Wilonsky and Thor Christensen sheepishly acknowledge your superiority with downcast nods to the worn carpet of the Loew’s Anatole Chantilly Ballroom is especially glorious.
Here are some shows you’ll dig this week:
9/27/24 (Friday) A.K.A./Maldevera/Solly – Zounds Sounds B-Side: This is a record release party for A.K.A., a teenage power trio that will astound you with their musicianship—-particularly their ability to bounce between heavy-duty noodling and tight break-downs as if they’ve been eating and breathing these songs for several years (because they probably have). Get there early (7pm) for some classic riffage from Maldevera and some Replacements-esque bashers from the musical (and in one case, literal) godfather to both bands, Marc Solomon and his band Solly.
9/27/24- 9/29/24 (Friday-Sunday) Latinidades International Theatre Festival – Latino Cultural Center: A live cumbia band, a Colombian comedy, a late night poetry confessional, and a traditional Colombian dance performance round out an extremely full weekend of programming.
9/28/24 (Saturday) Future Islands/Oh, Rose – Longhorn Ballroom: Fair warning, you’ll be expected to dance.
9/28/24 (Saturday) Death By Monkey/Intake Drywall/I Love You/Maxxe/Termite! – Zounds Sounds B-Side: When one of the bands in the bill has the word “Drywall” in its name, you know it’s going to be a heavy show.
9/29/24 (Sunday) Weezer/Flaming Lips/Dinosaur Jr. – American Airlines Center: I didn’t realize that Flaming Lips and Dinosaur Jr. were on this bill until earlier today. This still doesn’t motivate me to see a concert at the cavernous soundscape that is the AAC, but I would definitely pay good money for some backstage footage of J Mascis barely masking his disdain for Rivers Cuomo while Wayne Coyne tries to lighten the mood by bouncing around in an inflatable sumo suit or something.
9/30/24 (Monday) Johnny Marr/JAMES – Majestic Theatre: There will be a lot of people deliberating if it’s still too warm to wear a football scarf to this one.
9/30/24 (Monday) Sepultura/Obituary/Agnostic Front/Claustrophobia – The Factory: I feel bad for any security guard tasked with enforcing the “no vaping” rule Monday night.
10/2/24 (Wednesday) Xiu Xiu/Rawzilk – Rubber Gloves: For some reason, I thought that Xiu Xiu mastermind Jamie Stewart was cancelled several years ago. But I just read their Wikipedia Page and it turns out I’m wrong about that. So please proceed to Rubber Gloves in good conscience.
Here’s what I added to the big list this week:
Tommy Stinson (10/4); Duster/Dirty Art Club (11/8); “Weird Al” Yankovic (8/2/25)
CHECK OUT THE ATTACHED .PDF FOR A COMPLETE LIST OF SHOWS I THINK YOU’LL LIKE (I promise, it’s virus free).
You can catch me at:
Definitely A.K.A. and Solly (9/27); Definitiely Tommy Stinson (10/4); Definitely Latinidades International Theatre Festival (9/26-10/13); Maybe The Lemon Twigs (10/24); Definitely Guided by Voices (10/26); Definitely The Jesus Lizard (10/31).
Tell me where you’ve been, where you’re going:
Drop me a line or two and tell me about some good shows you’ve seen recently or are planning to see. I’m very suggestible.
If you’re new to this newsletter:
I started this newsletter (er, Substack) because I’ve been frustrated with the haphazard way I’ve been getting (and missing) concert announcements in the post-newsprint age.
I took matters into my own hands and culled the various sources to compile a list of events I’m interested in, or think my friends might be interested in, with the hope that we all start going to more shows (and hopefully a few together).
Please let me know if you think I missed anything.
If you have any friends who you think might want to be added to the list, just press the “Share Earplug Weekly” button below. The rest is up to them and their maker.
Your rock ‘n roll detective,
Matt
